How to be veggie abroad!
OK, I'm veggie, and before you decide I'm just "one of those" I have been for five years and it just happens to be that I don't enjoy meat... that's all. It is not a temporary thing that I can see, so travel has no acception to the rule. No matter how much my brother waves some sort of odd crocodile tail in my face claiming its the best thing he's ever had. I'm not going to eat it.
It's quite hard to figure out what may or may not contain meat when you can hardly understand the menu. Especially when meat is one of their delicacies. So I'm going to give you five tips on how to do vegetarianism abroad. If you follow these tips it all should be ok. Don't hold me to that though!
1: Learn a tiny bit of the lingo.... I think this is important wherever you go. It's not going to be as simple as you think without it....You hit those black roads where travel and adventure really thrive, you obnoxiously shouting "NOO CHIIICKEN" is not going to work! Trust me, been there, seen that, done it. Simply avoid the embarrassment. One tip that I can provide is saving a few of the words to your phone, then you won't forget them and you don't have to rely on a hungry brain! It's a really quick thing that can save hassle.
2. Don't panic, You are not going to starve. I repeat you will not starve. If worst comes to worst you can always hit that local supermarket and pick up a few bits but that's if all else fails.There is always going to be sides that you can haplessly consume if you really don't fancy anything else, no shame.
3. Prepare yourself. If you're going to Italy expect Italian or if you in France expect french food! It's something simple, but people really easily forget. You need to introduce your eyes to sheeps heads if that's a popular dish where you're traveling! It's a small factor but don't end up being one of those travelers who'd rather go to that mass chain business than eat where the locals do (though if all else fails they are a safe-ish bet if your starving).
4. Celebrate you are living people's dream! Never ever forget that you are doing something that people dream of and save their whole lives for! Whenever I meet someone in England that has saved for years to come to where I live it puts it in perspective. Always be greatful. Love the travel. Food is a small factor of what travelings about just knock it back into perspective every now and then.
5. Keep that mind open. Some of my favorite dishes that I've ever had have been the only thing on the menu I can eat and I often want to go back to the country just to have them again! You will have meals you love and ones you hate, but it will all be worth it when your breath is taken away by the journey.
